Next Meeting

Saturday, March 3, 2012, noon to 3 PM, Bedford Library

(snow date: sometime in 2013)

George Doorakian

"Getting Lost In What WE LOVE - - - The Beginning And Into the Last Chapter"

George Doorakian, retired Research Chemist, daylily hybridizer, founder of the Patriot Daylily

Society (PDS) and current PDS board member, is the speaker for our March 2012 meeting.

George's registered daylily cultivars have won four Honorable Mention AHS Awards (for H.

ʻMalachite Prismʼ, H. ʻNancy Britzʼ, H. ʻEmerald Starburstʼ, H. ʻRose F. Kennedyʼ). He has been

a speaker at all of the major national daylily symposiums. George is also a Master and

Consulting Rosarian of the American Rose Society and is the recipient of the Gold, Silver and

Bronze Medals from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for educational and potted rose

displays.

His presentation will include his first horticultural experiences of 65 years ago and working into

the present time - - - deep into his last chapter. In addition, Georgeʼs newest daylily seedlings

and introductions will be discussed. For those interested in viewing cutting-edge seedlings, as

well as hearing about a lifetime of hybridizing, this is a no-miss lecture.

George will entertain any questions you may have. See you there!

Snow date: If the weather is bad on March 3 (or predicted to be bad), go to

http://contrariansview.org/onashisite/PDS/snowdate.html

to verify that the meeting is still being held and has not been postponed. We will try to

have any announcement of postponement posted before 10 AM on the day of the

meeting. (This is a public area - no need to log in to see the message.)

John R Pike Photo Contest February 3

All members are invited to submit their daylily photos for our annual contest by January 13 so that they can be presented at the Feb 3 meeting for viewing and judging. As always, the winners of the 12 categories will have their entries featured full size on our calendar.  Everyone who enters will have at least one of their photos printed in each category they entered. Send them to patham@cox.net as high resolution photos. You could also mail a disk if you'd rather to Patsy Cunningham, 54 Mt Vernon Blvd, Pawtucket, RI 02861.

1a/b-1950 or earlier bloom/clump, 2a/b-1951-1970 bloom/clump, 3a/b-1971-1990 bloom/clump, 4a/b-1991-2004 bloom/clump, 5a/b-2005 onward bloom/clump, 6-seedlings, 7-gardens (seedlings and gardens now each have 1 category instead of 2).   Limit of 4  photos per category. Please name the file "category cultivar year breeder yourinitials" ie "5a Isabelle Rose, Laprise 2009 KC.jpg". I have a new system of avoiding mistakes this year and naming this way will be a big help. Any questions, email me or call 401-952-8917. Encourage your photographer friends to join the club, so they can enter and have their photos in the calendar.

Hint: If you are cropping and have a choice, remember it will be fitting on an 11 X 8.5" page on the calendar if it wins.
Vertical is certainly okay, but if all other things are equal, choose the horizontal version to send
